Seminar

Stereo photography is a valuable tool for practicing geoscientists and engineers. This half-day course will introduce techniques and applications of stereo photography ranging from qualitative 3-D documentation and visualization of field relationships to quantitative photogrammetric methods that allow for accurate mapping of geologic structures using scaled photorealistic 3-D models created using stereo photographs. Both of the instructors are consultants with a wealth of experience using stereo photography on a variety of consulting projects. Topics covered will include:

  • Some very basic theory
  • Cameras and lenses
  • Commercially available software
  • Field and logistic considerations
  • Project examples of 3-D stereo photography
  • In-class demonstrations of 3-D model creation and virtual mapping

Instructors

Dr. Edmund Medley, PEng/PGeo, is a Senior Consultant with Geosyntec Consultants in Oakland, California. He has over 30 years of varied international experience in geotechnical and geological engineering consulting, mineral exploration prospecting, failure investigation, project management, litigation testifying, academic research, teaching, and lecturing. Dr. Medley specializes in the engineering and geological characterization of bimrocks (block-in-matrix rocks), complex geological mixtures of rock and soil such as melanges, fault rocks and weathered rocks. He is professionally licensed as an engineer and geologist in the USA, Canada and UK. Dr. Medley has authored/co-authored over 50 professional contributions, presented over 150 professional and academic lectures, and taught several Short Courses and MCLE Credit courses. He is the 2009 Richard H. Jahns Distinguished Lecturer in Engineering Geology.

Dr. William Haneberg, L.E.G., L.Hg. is a Seattle-based consultant specializing in engineering geology, structural geology, physical hydrogeology, and computational geology. He has used terrestrial photogrammetry for virtual structural mapping of rock slopes in support of civil and mining projects, enhanced and interpreted lidar data for landslide and seismic hazard assessments, and performed digital terrain modeling on projects throughout the United States in addition to India, Nepal, and Papua New Guinea. Before leaving to establish his consulting practice in 1999, Bill was a Senior Engineering Geologist and Assistant Director at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines & Mineral Resources. He has also taught at New Mexico Tech and Portland State University, and in 2006 he received the Claire P. Holdredge Award from the Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists for his book Computational Geosciences with Mathematica. For more information, please visit www.haneberg.com.
