The Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers (CITE) has developed a guide to help municipalities and the land development industry better design non-residential development sites to promote accessibility by travel modes other than the single occupant automobile. The report, which was subsequently adopted as an ITE Recommended Practice, also identifies a range of supporting actions and policies that jurisdictions can use to create an atmosphere conducive to sustainable transportation initiatives.
To promote broader application of the 230 guidelines in the document, CITE has also developed Greenmodes - an innovative and unique Application Support System. The goal of the system is to achieve more effective knowledge transfer than what is attained through a conventional guidelines document and course approach, and to make it more convenient to apply this amount of knowledge in practice. The system also provides a web-based system for multi-user/multi-office tracking of project development, and for management of the data related to a project’s evolution and review.
The seminar will lead the attendees systematically through a process of applying the site design guidelines for a case study, including the following considerations:
- Bicycles
- Building layout
- Pedestrians
- Site access
- Transit
- Internal network
- Ridesharing
- Parking
- Pick-up / Drop-off
- Loading
The format of the session will consist of technical presentations on site design in conjunction with the application of the Support System to a case study.
Who should attend?
Individuals employed in the public or private sector that are involved in the design and review of site plans and any aspect of promoting transit, transportation demand management and cycling. Individuals interested in seeing how the next generation of tools for training and project management may also benefit from this seminar.
Brian Hollingworth, P.Eng., B.Eng. MaSc.
Brian Hollingworth is a Director of IBI Group specializing in transportation planning and sustainable development. Brian is a recognized expert in the area of sustainable urban transportation and has carried out studies in this regard for Transport Canada, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Environment Canada, the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) and Natural Resources Canada. He was the lead author of “Promoting Sustainable Transportation Through Site Design” a recommended practice document published by the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
Kelvin Roberts, B.Sc Hons (Transportation); President, NEXT Solutions
Over the last 30 years, Kelvin Roberts has been involved in a wide range of transportation engineering and planning projects. During this time, he recognized the need for helping practitioners make use of the vast amounts of evolving knowledge. In response, he formed NEXT Solutions, which develops electronic knowledge transfer systems, mainly in the fields of transportation sustainability and road safety. One of the first of these systems was Greenmodes - a multi-disciplinary support system for promoting sustainable transportation in new developments.
