Seminar

Performance-based seismic engineering is becoming a more prevalent part of British Columbia practice. The $1.5 billion Ministry of Education seismic mitigation program for the province's schools has introduced performance-based engineering (Bridging Guidelines) to achieve an acceptable level of life safety using cost-effective retrofit solutions. This relatively new methodology will soon be expanded to incorporate non-school buildings. This seminar will highlight the experience gained from the school seismic mitigation program within the broader context of all types of low-rise buildings. Specific topics to be addressed in this seminar include:

. Vulnerability of low-rise buildings
. Primary risk assessment parameters
. Performance-based retrofit philosophy
. Soil amplification
. Anticipated adaptation of Bridging Guidelines for non-school buildings
. Adaptation of school seismic retrofit techniques for non-school buildings
. Future trends in local seismic engineering practice

Instructors

Dr. Graham Taylor P.Eng., Principal - TBG Seismic Consultants Ltd.

Dr.Graham Taylor has twenty years of experience in seismic engineering in British Columbia. He brings to this seminar the perspective of both a local practicing consulting engineer and the responsibilities of Project Manager for the UBC Bridging Guidelines research team. This mixture of leading applied research and application to local practice will be the primary focus of Graham's contribution to this seminar.

John Wallace P.Eng. Struct.Eng., President - Pomeroy Consulting Engineers Ltd.

John Wallace has over 35 years of design and consulting experience. He's been actively involved with APEGBC on several fronts including as a member of the BC Codes & Practices Committee, Structural Qualifications Board and Seismic Peer Review Committee.
