Seminar

Bimrocks (block-in-matrix rocks) are geologically complex mixtures of rocks and soils, such as melanges, fault rocks, and weathered rocks. Bimrocks present major challenges to geopractitioners because successful and economical characterizations of rock/soil mixtures are frustrated by the spatial variability of the mixed materials and the broad range in mechanical properties of the components. This Short Course will present some broad concepts on characterization, design and construction in bimrocks that have been provocative, yet useful, to geo-practitioners around the world.

The following content will be introduced:

  • Introduction
  • Melanges, Soil/Rock Mixtures and Bimrocks
  • What is Block, What is Matrix?
  • Characterization of Melanges and Bimrocks
  • Strength and Mechanical Properties of Bimrocks
  • Estimation of Volumetric Block Proportions
  • Estimation of Block Size Distributions
  • Comments on Slope Stability, Permeability, Constructability
  • Case History
  • Closure

Instructor

Dr. Edmund Medley, P.Eng/P.Geo is a Senior Consultant with GeoSyntec Consultants, in Oakland, California with over 30 years of international geological/geotechnical engineering experience. He specializes in the characterization, design and construction aspects of bimrocks (block-in-matrix rocks) such as melanges, weathered rocks, fault rocks and other chaotic geological mixtures of soil and rock. He also identifies the geotechnical/geological engineering vulnerabilities and causes of civil engineering failures. Dr. Medley earned his Geological Engineering degree at the University of British Columbia and his graduate degrees in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. He is licensed as an engineer and geologist in the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom, and is a Member/Fellow of several learned and professional bodies. Dr. Medley has authored/co-authored over 50 professional contributions, presented over 150 professional and academic lectures, and taught several Short Courses and MCLE Credit courses. He is the 2009 Richard H. Jahns Distinguished Lecturer in Engineering Geology.
