Construction, demolition and renovation account for about one third of the region’s waste, or approximately one million tonnes every year. The majority of this waste can be reduced, reused or recycled and does not need to unnecessarily add to disposal. With landfill sites nearing capacity, the sighting of new ones or alternative means of disposal uncertain, designers, builders, contractors and engineers are under increasing pressure to specify and establish waste management plans and programs for construction and renovation sites, to deconstruct existing structures rather then simply demolish them and to design new buildings to be easily renovated, reused or deconstructed.
You will learn how to effectively and economically reduce waste by designing for deconstruction and adaptation, reusing and recycling salvaged materials as well as creating and implementing a waste management plan. A close look at existing and pending changes in regional policy, industry trends, marketability of sustainable building practices, financial impacts of demolition versus deconstruction, salvaging and recycling building materials, monitoring and reporting responsibilities will be examined. Exemplary projects will be profiled and activities will be used to reinforce key concepts.
This interactive seminar is designed for engineers, architects, design professionals, contractors, builders, community planners and policy makers working in the design, construction and building industry.
Lyn Ross, BES, Eng.L. – Senior Project Engineer, Metro Vancouver
Mr. Ross leads the Business Services Outreach Team at Metro Vancouver. This group provides tools, resources, programs and consultation services for businesses to assist them in adopting sustainable operations and practices. The reduction, reuse, recycling and diversion of solid waste materials from landfill such as paper, cardboard, organics and construction and demolition waste is a current team focus. Mr. Ross is also a past Chair and Director for GeoExchange BC – a geothermal heat pump industry association he formed in 2002. A graduate of the University of Waterloo, Mr. Ross was previously a principal in an engineering consulting firm specializing in energy and environmental management.
Mr. Ross will provide a regional perspective of waste collection and management infrastructure relating to construction, demolition and renovation residuals. Materials banned from disposal and pending changes in regional policy will also be discussed.
Diana Klein, B.Sc., LEED® AP, P.Eng. – Founder, Eco-Integration
Diana Klein is a sustainable design consultant with over 25 years experience in the construction industry and specifically in the design of sustainable buildings. She came to Canada from the UK in 1988 and worked as a structural engineer for Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd, a structural and building envelope engineering company. Diana became their sustainable specialist and researcher for environmental design issues. Her first ‘green’ project was the CK Choi Building at UBC (1993), a building embracing a holistic approach to building design, and built using salvaged materials. Following this time she worked on many sustainable / LEED® projects including Life Sciences Centre, UBC (LEED® Gold); and Abbotsford Hospital, B.C (target LEED® silver); Island Medical Building, Victoria (LEED® Gold).
She founded her own sustainable design practice Eco-Integration in January 2006. Diana consults on sustainable building design for projects and education. One of her current building developments is Millennium Water; South East False Creek, Athletes Village in Vancouver. At the 2008 Living Future Conference she co-delivered a workshop on designing for adaptability and deconstruction. She is an engaging speaker and will challenge participants to embrace change. Diana is an active advocate for green building and past member of the Board of Directors of Cascadia USGBC / CaGBC. She was also part of the APEGBC task force advising on the BC Green Building Code launched by the Provincial Government last year.
Corinne Fulton – General Manager 3R Demolition
Corinne Fulton has worked within the demolition trade since 1974. She was on the Board of Directors with the Used Building Materials Association for a two-year tenure. She was on an advisory committee with the Provincial Government and the Greater Vancouver Regional District who's mandate is "to encourage methods of recycling and materials re-use - instead of using landfill" and as well focusing on the abatement of hazardous materials. Corinne is also actively working with a task force for the Provincial Government with regards to "Tax Shifting" for used building materials.
Facilitator: Vaillant Tang, M.Eng., P.Eng., LEED® AP – Project Engineer, Metro Vancouver
