Simon Fraser University - Introduction to Field-based Digital Data Capture for Geologists

Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
and
Sunday, March 28th, 2010 – 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Simon Fraser University Vancouver Harbour Centre Campus

The registration fee is $250 ($238.10 + $11.90 GST) and includes • Two days of instruction • Light refreshment at the two morning breaks and one afternoon break • Lunches • Course materials and the use of the electronic handheld devices during class.

Have you heard of geologists charging their PDAs and creating Bluetooth connections to prepare for a day in the field? Do you wonder how anyone could map in a fault contact without a hip chain and grid mylar? If so, this non-credit course is for you.

Improved portable computers and an increased utilization of digital data have transformed mineral exploration fieldwork but many options exist for getting digital in the field. This course will provide an overview of available software and hardware, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of digital versus conventional data capture and describe some potential pitfalls and solutions.

A large component of the course will comprise practical, hands on mapping exercises. In this way, you will get to use handheld devices to capture points, lines and polygons and assign them attributes in the field (albeit a concrete one). The course will conclude with exercises in editing the raw field data and preparation of a complete map product so participants should bring a computer with their preferred GIS software for downloading and editing their field data. Additionally, participants should have a basic understanding of desktop GIS software.
