All applicants for registration as professional engineers, professional geoscientists or limited licence in British Columbia are required to complete the Law and Ethics program. This requirement may be met in one of two ways:

CD-Rom features:
- Pause, replay and fast forward the video and slides;
- Preview slides;
- Print the powerpoint presentations;

Practical Law for Engineers and Geoscientists
Will you ever face a contract dispute with a client or subcontractor? What would you do if you were found liable because of work you have performed? This session reviews a variety of legal practices as they pertain to engineering and geoscience. Join us so you can have the information you need about Contract Law, Tort Law, Liability, and Dispute Resolution.
Occupational Health and Safety
Do you know the rules you need to follow as an employer or employee when it comes to safety in the workplace? Did you know that ignorance of these rules is not an excuse for noncompliance? Did you know that there are serious penalties for not complying with Occupational Health and Safety Regulations? Join us so that you know the codes, standards and legislation that govern workers and workplaces in BC. Protect yourself.
Employment Law
What happens when there is a dispute in the workplace because one party is seen to have not fulfilled their obligation? Learn about Employer and Employee duties as well as the laws that govern the rights of individuals in the workplace. Emphasis is placed on Common Law, the Employment Standards Act, the Human Rights Code, and the Labour Relations Code.
BREAKOUT SESSIONS
Intellectual Property
Targeted specifically to electrical and electronic engineers, this session will explore the concept of intellectual property, explore how ownership of intellectual property is determined, and provide tips on how to protect creative endeavors.
National Instrument 43-101 and Mining Ethics
Geoscientists and Engineers employed in the mining sector have legal and ethical obligations under National Instrument 43-101. This session will describe these obligations and discuss ethical issues specific to mining.
Construction Law
Engineers who practice in the construction industry will at some point need to deal with issues such as builder's liens, trust and holdback, payment certifiers, and other contract issues. This session will focus specifically on construction related legal issues.
The Professions - Engineering and Geoscience
What do Professional Associations and Regulatory Bodies have to do with your practice? APEGBC, CCPE and CCPG play a key role in the practice of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists. This session will look at the activities and responsibilities of these three associations.
Practice Review
Professional Practice and Ethics are important cornerstones in the practice of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists. Issues such as quality management and practice review will be discussed.
The Discipline and Enforcement Process
When a member's conduct is called into question, the issue may sometimes lead to a disciplinary hearing. This section reviews the investigation and discipline process.
Code of Ethics, Sustainability, and Case Studies
Professional Engineers and Geoscientists are obligated to take action if they believe the health, safety and welfare of the public or environment is threatened. The Code of Ethics will be explored and illustrated with examples. Also learn how practicing in a sustainable manner is linked inherently to the Code of Ethics. The principles, goals, and guidelines for sustainability will be discussed.
Incident at Morales: A Case Study
What would you do if you were faced with an ethical dilemma that pitted you between the safety of the public and the advancement of your career? A short film illustrates the importance of healthy moral decisions. It follows the career of a young engineer who is hired to design a chemical plant for a new product. Throughout the project, he is faced with many ethical decisions.
