Provisional Member

A membership status designed for internationally trained engineers and geoscientists.

In October 2003, APEGBC members approved the development of a new status called Provisional Membership. This new designation recognizes and provides member status to internationally trained engineering and geoscience graduates who have completed the academic, professional and character requirements for registration as Professional Engineers or Professional Geoscientists.

Candidates for Provisional Membership are missing only the required one year of experience in a Canadian environment under the direct supervision of a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist.

Provisional Members will have:

  • demonstrated academic qualification through an interview or academic examination(s);
  • have four or more years of engineering or geoscience experience abroad that has been reviewed and approved by APEGBC
  • completed the Law and Ethics requirement; and
  • passed the Professional Practice Examination.

Provisional Membership is for a one-year, non-renewable term.  The intention of the Provisional Membership status is to aid individuals who have been trained internationally in their search for engineering or geoscience work in an Engineering Canadian environment or a Geoscience Canadian Environment. This membership will also act as an identifier for companies reviewing candidates for employment.

Professional status will be granted to the Provisional Member once he or she has completed the year of Canadian experience, pending a final satisfactory review and approval through APEGBC registration channels.

APEGBC began offering Provisional Membership status on January 1st, 2004.

  • If you are interested in becoming a Provisional Member, you will need to apply for Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist first. Provisional membership will be offered to you once you qualify as determined by APEGBC.
