In celebration of National Engineering and Geoscience Month (March 2010) the Central Interior Branch is pleased to host an Ultimate Popsicle Stick Bridge Building Contest to be held Saturday, March 20th, 2010 at Pine Centre Mall. The contest is open to all students in Grade 1 through Grade 12, with three categories: Primary (Grades 1 through 3), Intermediate (Grades 4 through 7) and Secondary (Grades 8 through 12). There will be awards for the top three bridges in each category, as well as a prize for the most attractive design.
You can help with the success of our planned event by getting involved one of the following ways:
- If you know of any students that might be interested in participating, send them the flyer and encourage their participation.
- Share details of this event with your neighbourhood school or the school or youth groups that your children are attending.
- Volunteer to help on the day of the event by contacting a branch representative at ci@apeg.bc.ca.
- Approach your employer about providing sponsorship for this event.
There is no enrollment fee to enter the contest; however, we do encourage participants to bring a donation of a non-perishable food item in lieu of an entry fee. All items collected will be donated to the local food bank.
The Popsicle stick bridge building contest is an excellent activity for young people to learn about applied sciences and have fun! We invite you to come to the mall on the day of the event and check out the bridges and the other exhibits.
For contest information and rules please check our website www.apeg.bc.ca/ci or email us at ci@apeg.bc.ca. Or come visit us in Pine Centre Mall on March 6th for more information and/or bridge building kit.
Please help us make our event a success!
Best Regards,
Shiloh Carlson, P.Eng.

Details:
On Saturday, February 23, 2006 the Central Interior Branch held its 12th Popsicle Bridge contest. This year the event was located in the central area of the Pine Centre shopping mall. Thanks to an energetic publicity campaign amongst the elementary schools, supplemented by a promotional video created by Ben Cheung (eldest son of APEG Councillor Emily Cheung), 20 entries were received from Elementary school children. There were only three High School entries, together with 17 Adults, 5 of which were in the “Professional” class. A large group of parents and supporters were on hand to watch the intense struggle for prizes amongst the entrants, and between competing family members. One family was represented by three generations!
A very generous donation from the Nechako Rotary Club as well as donations from many local engineering companies, contractors and suppliers, enabled us to give the top three contestants in each category cash prizes as well as Plaques.
The Elementary School winner’s bridge collapsed at 351 lbs, the High School winner at 160 lbs, and the open adults at a shattering 671 lbs. The best that the professionals could manage was a miserable 73 lbs!
The event included poster displays about two major highway bridge projects in the City of Prince George, the twinning of the Highway 97 crossing across the Fraser River, which is now under construction, and the Cameron Street replacement bridge across the Nechako River, which is out for Tender. In addition a display of rock specimens, supplied by the local Ministry of Mines office, attracted much attention from adults as well as children. Four students from the Environmental Engineering program at U.N.B.C. provided general assistance and, during the morning before the event, challenged children to design and construct simple water filtration units involving cut down pop bottles, cotton swabs and different sizes of sand and gravel.
