Dr. Isaacson is Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia. He received his degrees in engineering from the University of Cambridge. He has been a faculty member at UBC for over 30 years, and has served as Head of Civil Engineering and as Dean of Applied Science. His area of research relates to coastal and ocean engineering and he is the author or co-author of two texts and over 250 technical papers. Throughout his career, Dr. Isaacson has remained active as an engineering consultant. Dr. Isaacson is the recipient of several awards, including the R.A. McLachlan Memorial Award from APEGBC.

(LEED) Construction Tour of the BC’s 6th Regional Cancer Centre

Date:

Details: Construction Tour of the BC’s sixth regional cancer centre. The centre will be a two storey facility and will house the BC Cancer Agency’s radiation therapy, systemic therapy, and supportive care and population oncology programs.  The construction of the regional centre in Northern BC will allow for critical cancer care closer to home for northern residents and in addition to treatment and support services the facility will also support research activities. The centre will be designed and built to a LEED Gold standard and will feature a green roof. Wood is a key design element.The facility is expected to be completed in September 2012.

The site is an active construction site and the following PPE is required to participate in the tour. Please bring the following with you:

  • Safety Footwear
  • Reflective vests

Adrian Mohareb, P.Eng., LEED AP, City of Prince George

Join us in an informative presentation and follow-up Q&A session on opportunities to save energy and money in Prince George through the Community Energy Manager Program.

Adrian Mohareb is the Community Energy Program Manager with the City of Prince George. He has previously worked in greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement and reporting for Technology Early Action Measures, and as a Policy Analyst for the International Environment Policy Division at Natural Resources Canada, where one of his roles was as the Technology Expert for the Canadian delegation to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He has a Masters Degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Ottawa and a Masters in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability from the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona, Sweden, where he and his colleagues developed a resource guide for practitioners to engage municipalities in the move towards sustainability.

Topic: “Reforming the Engineers and Geoscientists Act”

Speaker: Geoff Thiele, LLB
Director, Investigation and Discipline, APEGBC
Mr. Thiele will discuss the research done by APEGBC on best practices in professional regulation that lead to Council’s recommendations for Act amendments. He will also discuss the consultation process being undertaken by APEGBC with members and other stakeholders on Act amendments and the role branches and branch members can play in these important initiatives for the future of the professions. Speaker Background: Mr. Thiele joined APEGBC as the Associate Director, Regulatory Compliance in October 2004 before moving into the role of Director, Investigation and Discipline, where he is responsible for the complaint (investigation and discipline of members) and enforcement (illegal practice) processes, as well as providing general legal advice to the Association.

You are invited to our upcoming presentation “Enbridge Northern Gateway Project – Aspects of the planning and design for a proposed pipeline in Northern British Columbia” and dinner hosted by the Central Interior Branch on Thursday January 20th, 2011. Mr. Ray Doering, P.Eng., Engineering Manager, Enbridge Northern Gateway Project
Mr. Shane Kelly, P.Eng, M.Eng, Geotechnical Engineer, AMEC Earth & Environmental.

Description: Join us for a presentation and discussion on the engineering planning and design associated with the proposed development of a pipeline system through the various terrains encountered throughout Alberta and Northern British Columbia. Topics will include a review of the scope of the project; an update on the project status; approaches to route assessment and watercourse crossing method selection; the proposed use of tunneling through alpine terrain, and the scope of work completed for the project using local engineers and technical staff from the region.  

The Enbridge Northern Gateway Project is currently under review by National Energy Board and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency through a Joint Review Panel (JRP).  The project involves a new 1172 km long twin pipeline system running from Bruderheim, near Edmonton, Alberta to a marine terminal that would be constructed at Kitimat, British Columbia.

The Central Interior branch would like to invite you to the 1st (and hopefully) annual BBQ and Golf Tournament with local ASTTBC members. To make it happen we need to you come on out with your clubs and enjoy a fun day with you colleagues.

Rentals: Golf clubs are available for rental. Please email ci@apeg.bc.ca if you would like to rent clubs.

Russ Kinghorn, P. Eng. is a professional engineer with over 25 years of experience in business consulting, mechanical engineering and project management.  He currently provides integrated business planning and decision support models for the coal and forest industries in Canada, the USA and Australia.

Mr. Kinghorn was formally inducted as President of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (APEGBC) on Saturday Oct. 17, 2009 at the Association’s 90th Annual General Meeting. Mr. Kinghorn’s previous positions with APEGBC include: Vice President of APEGBC’s Council in 2008/2009, Councillor for four years, chair of the Professional Practice Committee, member of the Team of Engineering and Geoscience Task Force, advisor to the Professional Renewal Task Force, chair of the Branch Representatives and chair of APEGBC’s East Kootenay Branch.

Mr. Kinghorn is a member of the Cranbrook Rotary Club having served on its executive for four years.  He serves on the Cranbrook Arches Committee, a group dedicated to revitalizing Cranbrook’s downtown core.  He has also been a volunteer with the Tetra Society in East Kootenay.

Mr. Kinghorn received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1981 and his Masters of Business Administration, Management Science & Information Systems from Simon Fraser University in 1991.

Call for Volunteers:

In celebration of National Engineering and Geoscience Month (March 2010) the Central Interior Branch is pleased to host an Ultimate Popsicle Stick Bridge Building Contest to be held Saturday, March 20th, 2010 at Pine Centre Mall. The contest is open to all students in Grade 1 through Grade 12, with three categories: Primary (Grades 1 through 3), Intermediate (Grades 4 through 7) and Secondary (Grades 8 through 12). There will be awards for the top three bridges in each category, as well as a prize for the most attractive design.

You can help with the success of our planned event by getting involved one of the following ways:

  1. If you know of any students that might be interested in participating, send them the flyer and encourage their participation.
  2. Share details of this event with your neighbourhood school or the school or youth groups that your children are attending.
  3. Volunteer to help on the day of the event by contacting a branch representative at ci@apeg.bc.ca.
  4. Approach your employer about providing sponsorship for this event.

There is no enrollment fee to enter the contest; however, we do encourage participants to bring a donation of a non-perishable food item in lieu of an entry fee. All items collected will be donated to the local food bank.

The Popsicle stick bridge building contest is an excellent activity for young people to learn about applied sciences and have fun! We invite you to come to the mall on the day of the event and check out the bridges and the other exhibits.
