“APEGBC OQM Program - a new tool for improving professional practice quality management”
“Vice-Presidential Address”

Speakers:

Gilbert Larocque, CD, P.Eng., LLB,
Associate Director, Professional Practice

Later this year APEGBC will launch its new Organizational Quality Management (OQM) Program. APEGBC recognizes the significant influence that organizations employing APEGBC professionals have on the practice of the professions. The OQM Program aims to address that influence and improve professional practice quality management at an organizational level. This self-funded program is available on a voluntary basis to all organizations providing professional engineering or professional geoscience products or services in BC. In creating the OQM Program, APEGBC has NOT created a quality management system (QMS) for organizations. Instead, the OQM Manual provides guidance to organizations about how to confirm, adapt, adopt or create policies and procedures for their QMS that are consistent with the quality management requirements that their APEGBC professionals must meet under the Act and Bylaws. As part of the OQM Program, APEGBC will issue an OQM certificate to organizations that have voluntarily implemented policies and procedures consistent with these requirements.

Mr. Larocque is a registered professional engineer in BC and Ontario and is a member of the Bar of British Columbia. He has over 30 years of engineering experience gained in the fields of aviation, project and program management, construction and building envelope. Gilbert provides guidance, and deals with professional and ethical practice-related issues within the professions of engineering and geoscience in BC, including matters of practice overlap with other professions. He also supports various APEGBC practice-related committees and divisions, and assist in the implementation of several aspects of the Professional Renewal Program.

Michael Isaacson, P.Eng., PhD
Vice President, APEGBC

Join us for an informative evening with APEGBC Vice President, Michael Isaacson, P.Eng., PhD. Dr. Isaacson will speak to us and take your questions regarding current APEGBC affairs including an update on Council initiatives and the Association.

Topic:

Mechatronics

Speakers:

Dr. Andreas Huster, P.Eng.,
Oceanworks International

"Mechatronics in Submarine Rescue Support"

As one might expect, submarine rescue is a complicated endeavour and requires multidisciplinary knowledge. A mechatronic education is key to managing the design and support of a rescue system throughout its life cycle. Submarine rescue systems are designed to be small and portable so that they can be transported anywhere in the world in a short time frame and attend to a disabled submarine as quickly as possible. Faults are bound to happen with such complex systems, and with the pressure of multiple lives at stake, having a dual education in mechanical and electrical systems is crucial for systems engineers to solve problems quickly.

Dr. Huster is the lead electrical engineer at Oceanworks International Corp. in Burnaby. Having received his B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science from Simon Fraser University in 1995, he earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 2003 with a focus on control system design and estimation. At Stanford, Andreas worked on several underwater robot projects and demonstrated a novel sensing system designed to enable autonomous manipulator tasks from floating underwater robots.

Dr. Carolyn Sparrey, P.Eng.
Assistant Professor, School of Engineering Science
Simon Fraser University

"Mechatronics Engineering at Simon Fraser University"

Mechatronics engineering at Simon Fraser University is the only full engineering undergraduate program in the Fraser Valley. Dr Sparrey will speak on the program and options as well as some of the co-op and post-graduation employment opportunities seen by the students. She will also touch on opportunities for collaboration between SFU Surrey and industry in research and design projects.

"Challenges Facing the South-of-Fraser Region"

Speakers:

Peter Holt    CEng. MIET. MeRSA
Valley Transportation Advisory Committee (VALTAC)

Download Presentation - Peter Holt

Download Presentation - Martin Fandrich

The region south of the Fraser River faces challenges as a result of increasing population, the continuing growth of Deltaport and a poor transportation and transit network. The presentation will place particular emphasis on looking at existing infrastructure such as rail corridors to provide additional capacity above and beyond that available on the already overburdened road network.

Peter Holt is a Chartered Engineer (UK) and former British Royal Navy engineering officer who emigrated from the UK with his wife and family in 1987. He has worked in senior management positions on major aerospace programs across Canada. A resident of Surrey for the last 14 years, Peter completed a three year contract as the Executive Director of the Surrey Board of Trade in 2007, where he was active in many of the regional committees and advisory groups. He is a particularly strong advocate for improved transportation and transit planning in the South of Fraser region. He is a director of both VALTAC (Valley Transportation Advisory Committee) and the Surrey based Fraser Valley Heritage Rail Society.

He operates his own independent business, Buckley Blair & Associates which is based in Surrey.

"Our Cosmic Journey  -  The Importance of Mineral Exploration, Discovery and Development"

Speakers:

John Chapman, P.Eng.,
Principal, J.A. Chapman Mining Services
White Rock, BC, Canada, Earth, Milky Way Galaxy, Universe One

John Chapman has extensive experience in the mining industry, both field and corporate, including exploration, mine development and operations.  His assignments have included engineering, supervision and management at underground, open pit and strip mining operations and more recently have ventured into direct involvement in equity and debt financing of junior mining companies.  As an investment hobby, John is involved in studies related to the commercial development of the moon, mars and general space technologies.

The wealth from mines, from the dawn of recorded human history, is the epic march of mankind along the path of progress.  It was the mines that made ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece and Rome great and in more recent times have created immense wealth to the benefit of the people across the world.

From his varied background in the mining industry and interests in astrophysics, astronomy and space development, John has a unique and interesting perspective that suggests we are part of the “space generation”, crawling off the surface of the earth into the “oceans of space” – and he will show us that mining will continue to provide the capability for humankind to advance to the moon, mars and on to the stars.

Join us in an informative presentation and follow-up Q&A session on the importance of mineral exploration, discovery and development, featuring John Chapman, P.Eng.
