The members of the Northern Branch soaked up the sun rays and breathtaking views during their tour of the Prince Rupert Grain in Prince Rupert on November 27. The event started with a delicious lunch at the Chances Gaming Center followed by a tour of PRG.
The members of the tour watched a video describing the impressive PRG operation and had a thorough tour of grain cleaner, silo stacks, and train dumping pits. With capacity to ship in excess of seven million tonnes a year, Prince Rupert Grain's (PRG) modern terminal has the highest throughput of any grain-cleaning elevator in Canada. Special thanks to Mark Newbery, Maintenance Superintendent of PRG Ltd. and our tour guide and Jamie Malthus, EIT Northern Branch Member at Large, for making the event a success.

Prince Rupert Grain: With capacity to ship in excess of seven million tonnes a year, Prince Rupert Grain's (PRG) modern terminal has the highest throughput of any grain-cleaning elevator in Canada. Its eight shipping bins and three tower-mounted loading spouts can load up to 4,000 tonnes of wheat or barley an hour. Using state-of-the-art technology, grain can be cleaned as fast as it is unloaded from rail cars. |

At this year’s Annual General Meeting and Presidents Visit in Smither’s, the new Northern Branch Executive of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC thanked the past chair, Robin Lapointe of Lapointe Engineering Ltd., for re-uniting the Northern Branch in 2009. The current Northern Branch executive and membership of 200 includes representation from the Terrace, Smithers, Prince Rupert and Kitimat areas.
The goal of the Northern Branch is to promote community involvement and Engineering in the North. The Annual General Meeting, which included a visit from the APEGBC President, closed off a busy year that included a dinner meeting in Kitimat, featuring a presentation on the electrification of highway 37 project, and a bridge building competition in Prince Rupert. The Northern Branch is planning to host a friends and family barbecue in Terrace in September and a host of new events across the North in the new year. |
