The tour of the BC Fruit Packers Cooperative in Kelowna was well attended, and it was very interesting to see the how the issues involved in the material handling of the apples, pears, and cherries are resolved without damaging the fruit. Sorting and grading is largely automated, with human intervention required for quality control and parts of the final stages of packaging. Long term storage while maintaining quality was also explained, so the entire process requires solutions from many different disciplines of Engineering.
