Have you ever played a sport where you get to slide a rock into another team’s house? Well the South Central Branch is proud to organize the First Annual Curling Bonspiel in Kamloops. This is a purely social and networking event so whether you’re a pro or you’ve never held a curling “rock” before, we invite you to come out for a fun night with fellow APEGBC members. This event is open to all members as well as their spouses. For those that have never curled before, just remember it’s not a competition. Some registrants will have played before and the teams will be organized accordingly. All you need to bring is a clean pair of running shoes that won’t track dirt onto the ice. Brooms and sliders will be provided.
We are currently looking for each team to play either one 8-end game or two 4-end games where teams can rotate. Once the games are finished, there’s a convenient lounge upstairs where networking can commence and refreshments can be served. Please note that some snacks will be provided but there will be no dinner. If you do not feel like curling but want to come out anyway, feel free to come around 8pm to catch the players as they wrap up curling and relax in the lounge. There is no cost if you are not curling.Hope to see you all out there. |
| Cost: |
$10 before March 23rd, 2012$15 after March 23rd, 2012 (Note: Registrations for curling will not be accepted at the door) To register on-line at APEGBC, please see details below. If you have questions, please contact Eric Sears at esears@urban-systems.com |

The South Central Branch of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (APEGBC) and Thompson Rivers University (TRU) are pleased to announce the results of the 9th Annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest, held at the Trades and Technology Centre at TRU on Saturday March 3rd 2012.
The contest features the loading of bridges built using 100 Popsicle sticks and wood glue that span 500 mm. This competition is held each year to have fun, celebrate National Engineering and Geoscience Week in Canada, and to raise awareness of the engineering program offered at TRU.
Seventy (70) bridges were entered by aspiring bridge builders in the elementary school category. Participating schools included A E Perry, Aberdeen, Bert Edwards, Clearwater, Lloyd George, McGowan Park, Pacific Way, Parkview, Skeetchestn Community School and South Sa-Hali. Ten year old Julia Fabbro-Smith from Lloyd George won the category with a bridge that carried an impressive 107.8 kg (238 lbs). The Polar Bear, Falcon, Fox and Moose Lodges of Scouts Canada also entered bridges.
Thirteen (13) entries were entered in the secondary school category. Twelve were from the Grade 11 physics class at Sa-Hali Secondary, however, a bridge built in Australia by Sarah Purvis and shipped to Canada specifically for the event won the category with a bridge that supported 168.1 kg (371 lbs).
Of the seven (7) entries in the open category, a bridge built by Ryan Watson and Kieren O’Neil carried the highest load: 316.7 kg (699 lbs). This was the highest load of all the bridges tested this year.
In the corporate category, intended to promote friendly competition and rivalry amongst the local engineering firms, a bridge built by Andrew Watson carried a load of 249.7 kg (551 lbs), enough to retain the silver stein for another year.
The top three bridges in each category were:

Subject Information:
Located in the southern interior of British Columbia, Highland Valley Copper is the largest open pit copper mine in Canada and is one of the largest in the world in terms of tonnage mined and milled. The operation employs approximately 900 people.
The pits are mined by conventional truck and shovel method on a 24-hour-a-day basis, 365 days a year. The Valley open-pit contains two in-pit crushers feeding a 12,000-tonnes per hour conveying system that delivers ore to stockpiles at the mill. The Lornex pit has a pit rim crushing/conveying system rated at 4,000-tonnes per hour.
The mill processes approximately 135,000-tonnes of ore per day to produce 1,000,000-pounds of copper per day and approximately 14,000-pounds of molybdemnum per day. Mill tailings are stored in a large tailings impoundment dam structure designed to withstand a factor 6.5 earthquake. Process water is recycled for re-use in the mill processes. |
