Career Awareness --Job Experience
The pilot program for students in grades 11 and 12 to provide them with a week of
focussed job equivalent experience.
The students are first selected for on the basis of grades and interest in
registering in engineering school.
This year the Program delivered an intensive
morning presentation by Claudio Arato, P.Eng (APEGBC council) and Monica
Danon Schaffer, P.Eng. (NovaTec Engineering) , Dr Bruce Dunwoody, P.Eng.
(Associate Dean of Applied Science UBC), Elvis Riou, P.Eng. (APEGBC
registration), and Wendy Ho EIT.( Ballard Power).
The students
spent the next day touring Nexen Chemicals, Neptune Terminals and
Forintek.
This year we are looking for placements for 25 students
from all over the GVRD and will of course have additional help from the
Career awareness committee and the members of the other lower mainland
branches.
Last year approximately 20 students from West Vancouver North Vancouver, Vancouver and Langley
were placed in career awareness or job experience positions. This is considered the highest priority
by School District Staff. Placements: CAE Machinery, North West Hydraulics, Creo Industries,
David Nairne and Associates, RA Duff, St Paul's Hospital Honeywell Devron, NORSAT, BC Ferries Corp.
and DEC Design.
The twenty students have been enthusiastic and look extremely promising. You, our members,
can still help to provide other students with on-the-job experience. For more information please
look at the West Vancouver School District Work Experience
Employers Manual.
