Fourth Annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Building Contest
The Sea to Sky branch held the fourth Annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Building Contest at Capilano Mall on Saturday
February 28th, 2004, during National Engineering and Geoscience Week.
A total of 30 bridges were destroyed during the contest. Similar to previous years,
the elementary division showed the strongest competition with 19 entries. The top 3
winners of this year's elementary division all participated in the contest last year.
Surprisingly, their bridges this year failed at a weaker force, below 800N. Tyler
Tom took the 3rd place with a bridge of exactly 700N strength. Last year's elementary
division winner Kirin Lamb chose a less controversial bridge design this year and
placed 2nd as her bridge failed a force of 736N. Top winner's bridge held up to 788N,
making Keegan Tom reign in the elementary division.
The intensity of the secondary competition differs significantly. With only 3
entries, every contestant was guaranteed to be a winner. John McFarlane placed
3rd with a 174N bridge. Justin Spratt took the 2nd place with a bridge held up to
853N, stronger than any of the elementary division's. However, Justin's bridge
posed no threat to the winner. Alex Stojkovic, our track-record winner from
previous contests, again built a very strong bridge failed at an impressive 1499N.
In fact, Alex's bridge was the strongest of all this year!
The 8 entries of the open division indicated a mix of new and returning
contestants. An eager team of 4, Malcom Blair, Jeff Clarke, Tim Ross, and
Jeff Blair built a bridge that brought them the 3rd place at 705N. Douglas
Spratt, P.Eng. took the 2nd place with a 912N bridge. Failing at 1496N, open
category winner, Jim Lamb's bridge was almost the strongest of all, with a
short of only 3N!
