This year’s event was a huge success. We had 101 competitors for the North Shore event. We also had a sister event in Sechelt – new this year – that attracted 44 participants! We landed the cover of the North Shore News. APEGBC also sent out a professional photographer to our event, so there are some very serious odds that photos of the event will we showing prominently in the upcoming issue of Innovation.
We had some remarkably strong bridges this year, but a notable highlight was seeing twenty-six bridges in the elementary division (most of them in the third grade) testing above the 1000 Newton mark! Making a bridge out of popsicle sticks and white glue that can support a weight of over 225 pounds is one thing, but that’s especially impressive when the bridge designers are eight years old! Results have been forwarded on to APEGBC and should be up on the website shortly.
Buckland & Taylor’s bridge building seminar was very well attended yet again. A huge thanks goes out to Don Burkholder and Chris Scollard for organizing this again, as well as the team of bridge engineers they had helping the students individually.
Many thanks to our Gold level corporate sponsors – Knight Piésold, Stantec, Associated Engineering, Opus DaytonKnight, McElhanney and David Aplin Recruiting. Their financial support of this event is a big part of its success and also ensures that it remains an event accessible to all – kit deposits are refunded to participants on competition day, making this an entirely free community event. KidsBooks, RST Instruments, Levelton and APEGBC also generously provided equipment and services to help our event.
The popsicle bridge competition is entirely volunteer-run. Behzad Ghods, Denis Michaud, Danny Li, Jagdeep Mann, Katherine Chan, Michael Oshoway, Marina Makovetski, Mina Vafae, Pedram Hosseini, Sylvie Michaud, Shahrzad Pedram, Judi Wannamaker and Jaime Guzman all helped us out tremendously. Members of the APEGBC S2S executive – Horst Unger, Eva Robertsson, Mihai Georgescu, Hamid Behmanesh, John Morgan – also played a big part in the event. Finally, Peter Reid was fantastic in his role as event coordinator this year. I was out of the country the day of the event, and Peter was able to step in and run the show – a big thanks to Peter!
See you all next year!

North Shore Newspaper Article
- In all we had 104 participants, a great turn-out of completed bridges given we had 158 registrants, and our biggest year ever! There were 78 bridges entered in the elementary school division, thirteen in the secondary division, six in the post-secondary division, and seven professionals.
- The top five bridges in the elementary school division were built by Boston Mah, Sara Cathcart, Ashton Gaerber, Maxine Yee and Cole Gaerber. Boston had the strongest bridge in the division, supporting 1731.5 Newtons (389 pounds of force!). The prizes for the top five bridges were Sony MP3 players.
- The top five bridges in the secondary school division were built by Justin Tyler Tom, Carina Chu, Keegan Tom, and two team entries from Howe Sound Secondary – Paul & Katerina, and Brandon & Eric. Justin had the strongest bridge in the division and the entire event, supporting 2713.1 Newtons (610 pounds of force!). The prizes for the top five bridges were Sony MP3 players.
- The top two bridges in the post-secondary division were built by Davis Chu and Christy Wong. Davis had the strongest bridge, supporting 1955.8 Newtons (440 pounds of force!). Davis and Christy were each rewarded with $400 scholarships.
- The professional title was won by Don Mah, building a bridge that supported 2181.5 Newtons (490 pounds of force), narrowly beating out the second placed bridge and winning the bottle of Mission Hill Family Estate Oculus. However, second place will likely get a respectable piece of the winnings, given it was Donna Mah that won the sliver medal there…
- West Bay, Cedardale and Cleveland elementary schools all had amazing turnouts, showing up with the handiwork of 44, 23 and 18 students respectively. Great showings, and garnering pizza parties for all of those classes. A big thank-you goes out to the Ms.Riley, Ms.Gibbons and Ms.Appelbe for their efforts!
- We had entrants from Squamish, Bowen Island and even as far away as Victoria.
- Full event results are attached in Excel format and will be posted on the APEGBC website shortly.
Thank you to all of the volunteers – Mingyu Li, Shanna Wang, Jack Shi, Celina Wang, Steven Luu, Chris Scollard, Don Burkholder, Andrew Huo, Jeff Boehmer, Kieran Field, Olivia Ou, Ruby Kwan, Carlos Iriondo, Cris Ciuperca, Horst Unger, Jenny Qi, Mahmoud Mahmoud, Mihai Georgescu, Peter Reid, Jim Branson, Alex Wai and Joao Sarmiento. A big thanks to the various team leaders and “hubs” – Mingyu bringing in a bunch of additional volunteering helpers, Chris running the crushing, Jeff being the all-important “guy with the truck”, Carlos for running the registration desk and Cris for being our set-up/tear down muscle. Mihai was a great media/exec contact, Alex provided a much-needed PA system and Kieran was the last volunteer standing. Peter Reid rescued the event with his laptop – swooping in when the older Dell “brains” of the event suffered a massive operating system crash the night before the event – thank you Peter.
None of this could be done without our sponsors – Dayton & Knight, Stantec, Associated Engineering, Knight-Piésold, McElhanney and David Aplin Recruiting. Equipment and venue support was also graciously provided by RST Instruments, Levelton Consultants, The Source and Bentall. APEGBC provided great admin support, swag and supplies for the kits. Buckland and Taylor put on an amazing bridge building workshop three weeks ahead of the event, hosting 110 parents and kids at their North Vancouver office.
For those volunteers and parents that took photos, please send in your favorite pictures to me and I’ll get them put up on Google’s Picasa so they can be shared amongst the group. We had plenty of bright, shining faces at the event, and I think our event has a serious chance at nabbing the cover of Innovation Magazine. After all, these kids are budding engineers – it’s great to see what the future of engineering looks like.
Thanks again and we hope to see you all next year!

Thank you all for taking part in the event. This year’s event was again a success. We had some amazing and innovative bridges. We had a bridge that supported nearly 5,000 Newtons!. We had entire classes of third-grade students attending. There were lots of prizes to give out, and plenty of smiling faces. There was plenty of swag, too (robot pens and yo-yos) – nobody left empty-handed. We were on the front cover of the North Shore News.
A big thank you goes out to our corporate sponsors – APEGBC, Knight Piesold, MMM Group, Associated Engineering, McElhanney, Stantec and David Aplin Recruiting. We also had terrific support from RST Instruments, Levelton and Kidsbooks. Buckland and Taylor put on an amazing bridge-building workshop, teaching budding engineers about structural principles. Brian Herrin and Darcy Riley put together a great teacher’s guide for the event. Sylvie Michaud was a great help with the poster. Capilano Mall provided a great venue. Thanks to Ken Parkinson of Mirror Image Photography for taking photos on competition day. The Source provided some amazing A/V equipment. Thanks to all of the event volunteers – Chris Scollard, Rob Taylor, Vivianne Mansour, Elizabeth Sherlock, Tim Aucott, Michaela Horner, Tala Mobayen, Carlos Iriondo and Derek from UBC Physics Outreach.

Everybody watching the bridge testing |
Here are some notes regarding the contest. Remember if you have any questions please feel free to contact the organizers.
- It is a good idea to buy extra popsicle sticks to build test spans and to select the strongest sticks with no defects.
- Popsicle sticks must remain whole.
- If you win, or place in your category, the popsicle sticks in your bridge will be counted. IF YOU EXCEED 100, it will result in disqualification.
- Check the Library out. There may be some good references which can help you build the winning bridge. Find out how to laterally brace and connect your bridge.
- Start early as you will have to build the bridge in steps. It would be difficult to build it in one go due the varying orientations of surfaces to be glued.
- The specified white glue must be clamped between wood layers, and should be put on sparingly. Glues themselves have no strength, the ability of the wood-glue-wood joint to hold together is crucial. Clamping each joint while it cures is extremely useful. The glue should be totally dry for maximum joint strength and minimum structure weight. Other glues cost more and don't perform as well.
- For parents: most uncured or wet white glue washes off with soap and lots of water.
- Take a look at previous years results and analysis, to see what kind of bridges did best. Note though that
the testing apparatus and some rules have changed so that bridges that did good in previous years may not necessarily
do that well this year.
- Have Fun !!!!!!!!
