It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you
to the APEGBC Vancouver Branch website. The Vancouver
Branch is a volunteer executive and our purpose is to
serve our local APEGBC Vancouver members through
education, community outreach and recognition.
Education
Our first goal is to disseminate relevant technical and
non-technical information to our members. To meet this
objective, we hold monthly breakfast seminars and annual
dinners with guest speakers from a wide variety of areas
and disciplines. We also serve to educate
Members-in-Training and students about what APEGBC is, its
place in society and how membership can be gained. For
this upcoming year, two logbook seminars and a UBC student
information session will be held to connect with these
aspiring Engineers and Geoscientists.
Community Outreach
Our second function is to reach out to families, children
and youths in our community. School visits, where
elementary and high school students learn about
Engineering and Geoscience from professionals, are regular
Branch activities. In addition, we annually host E-Fest.
This is a trade show style event at the Vancouver Public
Library where Engineering and Geoscience researchers,
consultants, students and teachers come together to
showcase the profession to Vancouver. It is our sincere
hope that children and youths, who may not have previously
had any knowledge of our profession, might be inspired to
choose this career path one day.
Recognition
Finally, a fundamental Branch task is to put forth
outstanding professionals for recognition or advancement
within the Association. This entails nominating members
for APEGBC President’s awards and endorsing members for
council elections through the APEGBC Nominating Committee.
We are very proud that a number of President Award
recipients and APEGBC councillors have been associated
with the Vancouver Branch.
Having contributed to the Vancouver Branch
executive for the past 5 years, I know that the many
volunteers who have served with the Branch have done so
with pride, befitting the high standards for which the
Association is known. I am very excited for the
opportunity to serve as the Vancouver Branch’s chair and I
look forward to the challenges and opportunities it will
offer.
If you have any interest in learning more
about the Vancouver Branch, the Association, attending
events or volunteering, I would invite you to please
browse our site or feel free to contact me through
van@apeg.bc.ca.
Sincerely,
Nathan Ozog, M.A.Sc, P.Eng

“To promote solidarity, well being and effective
communication and amongst our membership”
|
 |
The Vancouver Branch once again had a
highly successful year. Our accomplishments include
numerous sold out tours, a log book seminar, four
breakfast seminars, E-fest, and a president’s dinner. We
hope to continue and build on this success for this
upcoming year and start a number of new initiatives.
The mission of the Vancouver Branch is “to promote
solidarity and well being among our membership by
facilitating meaningful communication between our
membership, council, trainees, students, government, and
the public.” We accomplish this by organizing and hosting
professional development, outreach and networking events
for all of our members. The Vancouver Branch has come a
long way from first conceiving a Mission Statement in
2005. Over the past few years, our event attendance has
been steadily increasing and feedback from our members has
consistently been both positive and constructive. Our
breakfast seminars and tours are routinely sold out, our
student and young member outreach events continue to be
extremely successful, and our annual ‘E-Fest’ is one of
the largest Engineering and Geoscience public awareness
events in the province.
Our continued success as a branch comes directly from the
active participation of our executive and by the
increasingly open channels of communication with members.
We need new participants, new ideas, and new issues
brought forth from the APEGBC membership to build on our
past successes and to stay current as a profession. We are
all part of a noble profession, one which contributes to
the betterment of our province, country and civilization
as a whole. There are many challenges currently facing
APEGBC, and as a self-regulated profession it is our
responsibility to ensure that we address these issues to
maintain our societal obligation of protecting the public.
Simply put, the governing practices of our profession lies
in each of our hands. The Vancouver Branch’s hope is that
every member of APEGBC is interested in the continued
success of our profession and actively involved with our
profession, at a branch, division, committee, or council
level or through other engineering associations that
further enhance our profession.
To this end, the Vancouver Branch has another full year
planned ahead and hope that you will be interested in
joining us. Information on the events that we will he
having and ways to get involved are on our website
(www.apeg.bc.ca/van), which is continuously updated
throughout the year.
