2009-2010 Chair's Message

Branch Chair
Welcome to the Vancouver Branch of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia.

The mission of the Vancouver Branch is “to promote solidarity and well being among our membership by facilitating meaningful communication between our membership, council, trainees, students, government, and the public.” We accomplish this by organizing and hosting professional development, outreach and networking events for all of our members. The Vancouver Branch has come a long way from first conceiving a Mission Statement in 2005. Over the past few years, our event attendance has been steadily increasing and feedback from our members has consistently been both positive and constructive. Our breakfast seminars and tours are routinely sold out, our student and young member outreach events continue to be extremely successful, and our annual ‘E-Fest’ is one of the largest Engineering and Geoscience public awareness events in the province. We are looking forward to providing more fellowship and outreach for the 2009/2010 year.

Our continued success as a branch comes directly from the active participation of our executive and by the increasingly open channels of communication with members. We need new participants, new ideas, and new issues brought forth from the APEGBC membership to build on our past successes and to stay current as a profession. You are all part of a noble profession, one which contributes to the betterment of our province, country and civilization as a whole. There are many challenges currently facing APEGBC, and as a self-regulated profession it is our responsibility to ensure that we address these issues to maintain our societal obligation of protecting the public. Simply put, the governing practices of our profession lie in your hands. So if you are interested in aiding the continued success of our profession by volunteering with our branch, or if you feel that any issue relating to APEGBC needs to be addressed, then please send us an email, or better yet, come to one of our executive meetings – you can find the date, time and location at the bottom of any page on this website.

I wish you all the very best in the upcoming year!

Sincerely,

Tomer Curiel, M.A.Sc., E.I.T.
Chair, APEGBC Vancouver Branch

2008-2009 Year In Review

Past Chair
It has been another successful year for the APEGBC Vancouver Branch. I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of our successes.

In August at our annual planning BBQ we set our Year-at-a-Glance calendar that indicated the number and types of events we wanted to achieve for the upcoming year. We successfully executed each event we planned to hold and in all, we engaged approximately one out of every nine members of our Branch through our events.

This year we had breakfast seminars on the topics of “Risk in professional Practice and the Role of Liability Insurance”, “Next Generation of Sustainability and Green Buildings”, and “Thriving in the Slowdown”. Our Branch facilitated tours for the Triumf facility at UBC, Commissioning of a 5000 meter rated Remote Operated Vehicle hosted by ISE, the Seymour Filtration Project and two tours of the nearly completed Canada Line. Throughout the year our branch held a number of other activities and events including a Logbook Seminar, a Cheeze mixer for Engineering students at UBC, the annual “E-Fest” Public awareness event at the Vancouver Public Library , and our branch Christmas Party.

Some other notable successes for our branch this year included hosting a new event (STV Information Session), significantly improving in our communications in all forms (surveys, newsletters, website and emails), attracting several new volunteers to our executive, and maintaining fiscal responsibility.

It has been a pleasure and an honor to be the Chair of the Vancouver Branch and to work with such a dedicated group of volunteers.

Sincerely,

Kevin Riederer, M.A.Sc., E.I.T.
