The APEGBC Vancouver Island Branch is pleased to invite you to attend an upcoming Dinner presentation in Nanaimo on December 1, 2011.

Your present chair Wanda Miller, P.Geo will present the years financial report and other related association business in a short 5-15 minute presentation to open the event.


Michael K. Hooper BGS, MBA, President, CEO of the Nanaimo Airport Commission will present on the development of The Nanaimo Airport Expansion. Topics will cover the construction phase of the project through to future opportunities that are available as a result of the expansion.


Bernie Dumas, President, CEO of the Nanaimo Port Authority and George Hrabowych, P.Eng, Principal of Herold Engineering Limited will present an update on the Nanaimo Cruise Ship Terminal. The presenters will share some of the challenges and successes during construction and opportunities for the future of the Cruise Ship Terminal.

Nanaimo Canstruction Competition

Details:

The APEGBC Vancouver Island Branch is hosting a Canstruction Event on September 10, 2011 in association with Loaves & Fishes of Nanaimo and the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association. This will be the fourth year for the event that has seen an increase in participation each year and we are hoping to build on the success of last year’s marine themed event.  The purpose of this competition to build structures with cans of food, please see the Canstruction website (http://www.canstruction.com) and the APEGBC Vancouver Island Branch website (Past Events) for examples

Any number of people can assist in the design and planning of the structure. On the day of competition, however, teams are comprised of five (5) people plus one (1) person to assist in unpacking. The maximum size of the structure is 3m x 3m x 2.4m (L x W x H). After the competition, the canned goods are donated to the local community via Loaves & Fishes.

Vancouver Island Branch Executive Meet & Greet & Longwood Brewery Tour - June 29, 2011

You are invited to our Nanaimo Social for the APEGBC Branch - Vancouver Island.  This will be a good time to come and find out who we are, discuss current APEGBC issues, and learn about our volunteering interests.  For the upcoming year, we would like to increase participation with our Branch Executive, CANSTRUCTION (August 2010), nominations for APEGBC award recipients, field trips, and encourage school participation in the Popsicle Stick bridge building contests and other NEGW activities.  Feel free to come for a short visit and bring in fresh ideas for participation and engagement with APEGBC community on Vancouver Island.  Appetizers are served compliments of the Branch; drinks are available for purchase from the Pub.

A walk-through tour of the brewery is organized for 7:30pm and will cover the processes involved to produce the fine ales and lagers that Longwood is locally reknown for.  Tour is approximately 45 to 60 minutes long and will count for 1 PDH hour.

Mr. David Reid of HB Lanarc will be discussing the City of Campbell River's Sustainable Official Community Plan.  The City is in the process of updating its Official Community Plan, last completed in 2005.  The new Sustainable Official Community Plan will integrate sustainability principles and planning and includes a number of different strategy areas: social development, affordable housing, energy, structure and land design, cultural development, economic development, transportation, waste management and reduction, water conservation, parks and ecosystem protection, brownfield redevelopment, and an agricultural plan and study. 

The plan includes a unique partnership with three local first nations’ communities, and includes extensive input from residents, businesses, youth and community organizations.  In concert with the SOCP update, the City is also completing a number of other plans, allowing them to be fully integrated into each other: Master Transportation Plan update, Agricultural Plan and Study, Community Energy and Emissions Plan.

Comox Dinner Presentation

Randy Gray, School District No. 71, Career Program Coordinator
This presentation will look at the evolution of Robotics in B.C. high schools over the last 10 years, and where the vision is for the future with the intention to help foster an interest in engineering.

Randy is part of the team developing the after-school Robotics clubs.  He is the Vancouver Island regional director for the Career Education Society of BC, is on the executive for the Technology Education Association of BC, and is a member of the National Technical Committee for Robotics at Skills Canada.

They have after-school clubs in all of the secondary schools and are in year three of the elementary schools.  Students participate in several competitions each including: First LEGO League, Skills Canada Robots and Sumobots, and VEX Robotics.  They can build from either kits or from scratch.  The competitions require students to explore electronics, mechanics, engineering and physics in order to meet varying challenges.  Comox Valley students have won national challenges on several occasions.   This year and last year a high school team from the Comox Valley qualified and attended the VEX Robotics world robotics competitions.

Frank will provide a brief update on Council initiatives and the Association.

Frank Denton, P.Eng., is a professional engineer with over 34 years of experience. Until his recent retirement, he was the senior of three vice-presidents for McElhanney Consulting, a 350 person, civil engineering and survey/mapping company. He remains active with McElhanney Consulting, on a part-time basis, as a director. In addition to his engineering background, Mr. Denton brings knowledge and skills in accounting, commercial and contract law, project management and the real estate development

Topic:  Raven Underground Coal Project – Proposed Transportation through the Alberni Valley

Speaker:
Mr. John Tapics, President and CEO of Compliance Energy Corporation, will make a presentation on the Raven Underground Coal Project with particular emphasis on the transportation aspects of the project including the upgrades proposed for the port. While mining operations are proposed for the Buckley Bay area, the proposed transportation route includes shipping via the Port Alberni Inlet.  The presentation will include discussion on the transportation routes considered, proposed upgrades of the existing port infrastructure, and a summary of some of the environmental baseline studies being conducted as part of the application process.

Canstruction - August 2010

On August 31st Canstruction 2010 Nanaimo took place in the Diana Krall Plaza in downtown Nanaimo.

APEGBC Vancouver Island Branch helped organize the event along with the Downtown Nanaimo Partnership and Loaves and Fishes.

This year was a maritime theme and great fun was had by all. The event was for a very good cause as all the food was donated to the Food Bank.

Vancouver Island Branch - 19th ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT - June 4, 2010

Event Summary:

The 20th annual APEGBC Vancouver Island Golf Tournament was held on the 4th of June at the Cowichan Golf Club with approximately 80 golfers teeing it up for the shot gun event. The questionable weather at tee time quickly moved on resulting in a very enjoyable afternoon of golf followed by a great steak dinner. At the end of the day, over $3300.00 was raised for the non profit organization called Warmland Womyn’s Centre located in Duncan, B.C.

Topic: Sustainable Energy Sources in Campbell River – Tidal, wind and solar energy

Date: Thursday, May 20, 2010

Location: Royal Coachman Inn, 84 Dogwood Street, Campbell River, BC.  Dinner will be upstairs in the Carriage Room – separate entrance located to the right of main entrance

Speakers:
Ms. Amber Zirnhelt, the City of Campbell River’s Sustainability Manager will be discussing the City’s plans for alternate energy sources, such as tidal energy, wind energy and solar energy.  With a goal to become carbon neutral with respect to the City’s operations by 2012, the City is looking at various means to reduce green house gas emissions.  One of these means includes a recently completed tidal energy feasibility study.

Mr. Scott Fleenor of TerraTek Energy Solutions will focus on Solar Hot Water and its application to Campbell River’s proposed facilities.  TerraTek Energy Solutions, out of Courtenay, offers a range of renewable energy technologies, including solar, wind and micro-hydro power.

Cost: $35 for P.Eng. and P.Geo and guests
$30 for EIT and GIT

A cash bar will be available, as well as a bottle raffle.

Topic: Haiti/Chile Earthquakes – Eyewitness Accounts

Speakers:
Mr. Bill Colhart of the Canadian Medical Assistance Teams (CMAT) will discuss his experience providing medical relief  in  Haiti within 72 hours after the earthquake,  focusing on the requirements and challenges performing search and rescue in an urban setting. CMAT is a Canadian based grassroots disaster relief organization consisting of volunteer medical professionals.

Mr. Ralph Watts, P. Eng., P.E. of North Island Engineering will provide a PowerPoint presentation focusing on the damage expected after an earthquake, key factors that determine the extent of damage, how our structures compare to California and Chile, and some of the lessons we should learn from various earthquakes including the latest one in Chile.

Directions: Traveling north from Victoria on the TransCanada Highway; on arriving in Duncan, cross the silver bridge spanning the Cowichan River, turn right in to Travelodge parking lot located approximately three buildings after crossing bridge, just after the Sun 89.7FM sign.  Heading south from up island, the Travelodge is located on opposite side of the highway across from Safeway foods.

Topic: Mr. Olive is overseeing the rehabilitation of the historic Kinsol Train Trestle Bridge; completed in 1920 it is one of the four largest wooden trestle bridges in North America. The restoration of the trestle will fulfill a critical missing link in the region’s Trans Canada Trail network.

2009 Vancouver Island University Scholarship Recipients

The Vancouver Island Branch is pleased to announce that two Scholarship Awards of $750 each were awarded to Michael Engelman-Germain and Suzanne Ouellet. Both students are studying at Vancouver Island University (VIU) in the Bachelor of Science Program and are working towards careers in Engineering or Geoscience.

Funding for these awards is provided directly by members of the Vancouver Island APEGBC Branch through dinner meeting raffles and the Golf Tournament Hole sponsorships. Our sincere thanks to all APEGBC members who have helped make a difference for these students.

The presentation will cover the highs and lows resulting from public perception, characteristics of modern roundabouts, and their advantages over signalized intersections, along with some insight to performance based design for a burgeoning discipline that will become a more common solution to traffic control.

CALL FOR NATIONAL ENGINEERING AND GEOSCIENCE WEEK VOLUNTEERS

We are looking for some help to run the APEGBC popsicle bridge building booth at the Country Club mall in Nanaimo for the next two weekends, February 20 & 21 and February 27 & 28 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and for the final testing event on Saturday March 6 same time. No prior experience required.

Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition 2009


The Vancouver Island Branch of APEGBC held its 7th Annual Popsicle Bridge Building Competition at the Country Club Centre in Nanaimo.  We had over 25 participants  and many more spectators as it proved to be one of our finest competitions to date. This year, of worthwhile recognition was the winner of the 12 to 17 age category.  Her bridge withstood 254 lbs of load before it failed.
