Greetings all:
Together with the generous support of Nelson Hydro, the West Kootenay Branch of APEGBC is offering a tour of Nelson Hydro's generation facility. Nelson Hydro owns and operates a 16 MW hydroelectric generation facility located at Bonnington Falls on the Kootenay River 16 km southwest of Nelson. Though small compared to other Hydro-Electric facilities on the Kootenay River, the facility's year-round output of approximately 9 MW manages to supply about half of Nelson Hydro's energy requirements. The original facility was first operated in 1907, and over the years has seen many upgrades and expansions.
The tour is limited to individuals 18 years of age, or older. Attendees should wear proper footwear *, and if possible bring a hard hat and safety glasses (a limited supply of both will be available).
Tour will begin at 10:00AM Sharp, so plan to meet by 9:45 AM at the east entrance, located on Blewett road, 2.8km from the junction of Highway 6 and Blewett Rd.
Sincerely,
Mark Sirges, P.Eng
Past Chair, West Kootenay Branch, APEGBC
*Please note: Flat bottomed, closed toed shoes required. Running shoes are OK, high heels are not. Though not required, safety toed shoes would be preferred. |

Plant tour - Saturday, October 03, 2009
Roxul Inc – Grand Forks, B.C.
A tour of Roxul’s Grand Forks operation is being offered at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 03, 2009. It is expected to last approximately 1 - 2 hours.
This unique facility feeds a blend of minerals from nearby quarries and recycled slag into a 5 MW electric furnace, then spins the molten rock into fibres that form a “wool” mat. The end product is fire resistant, water repellent, non-corrosive & resistant to mold, fungi & bacterial growth. Roxul purchased the factory in November 1999. Since Roxul took over, the facility has undergone over $50 million dollars in improvements in the last 10 years. Roxul provides jobs to over 160 people in the Grand Forks area.
There is no charge for this event, but please email Waseem Saeed at saeedmw@yahoo.com if you are interested in attending this fascinating tour. Also, if possible, please wear safety-toed shoes/boots (other required safety equipment will be provided by Roxul). There will be a BBQ and pop lunch after the tour.

Popsicle Bridge Competition 2009 - Info Sheet
2008 Popsicle Bridge Contest - Flyer
The Popsicle Stick Bridge Building Competition is returning to the West Kootenay!
This year it is being held in conjunction with the Community Science Celebration on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at the Selkirk College Gymnasium in Castlegar. The basic idea is for children of all ages to:
- Build a bridge with white glue and 100 Popsicle Sticks
- Bring the bridge to the contest and watch it get destroyed when tested
- Learn about bridge building and bridge failure
- Maybe win some prize money
- Most importantly, have some fun
Contest entry fee (complete with material kit) is $10 each, with a $5 refund when the completed bridge is submitted for testing on April 4.
This competition is organized by the West Kootenay Branch of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia. For more details, please see the information sheet. If you have questions, contact Mark Sirges at msirges@ieee.org, or by phone at 250-368-2504 (days) or 250-368-6666 (evenings and weekends). Kits are available in Trail from Mark Sirges, or in Nelson from Paul Kernan (250-825-4089 or pkernan@shaw.ca) and in Grand Forks from Doug Noren (250-443-2439 or doug.noren@interfor.com). If you are located elsewhere, please contact Mark Sirges to make arrangements.
If you are aware of any interested students for which the $10 entry fee is a hardship, please contact Mark Sirges, and alternate arrangements will be made.
Please consider supporting this event, maybe build your own bridge, and certainly join us on Saturday, April 4 for the testing. Part of the Community Science Celebration is the Kootenay Regional Science Fair. As well, the Kootenay Association for Science and Technology (KAST) is hosting a crew from Science World who will be performing several stage shows. With so much going on, I hope to see you there.
Sincerely,
Mark Sirges, P.Eng.
