The No. 4 Slag Fuming Project, Dave Goosen, Business Development Manager, Teck Trail Operations.
About No 4 Slag Fuming Project
Teck Resources Limited will invest $210 million in the No. 4 Furnace Project at its Trail Operations to significantly increase its capacity to recycle end-of-life electronic waste (e-waste) and to improve its long-term viability. The No. 4 Furnace Project at Trail Operations includes the construction of a new slag fuming furnace and settling furnace that will integrate into the existing lead smelting process. Construction on the project will begin in 2012 with completion scheduled for 2014. In 2010, Trail Operations recycled just over 13,000 tonnes of e-waste, and this project will significantly increase Trail’s capacity to recycle end-of-life electronic components, helping to keep them out of landfills and allowing for the recovery and reuse of valuable metals.
E-Waste Process Fact
Electronic waste (e-waste) is the fastest growing waste in North America. According to Environment Canada, over 140,000 tonnes of end-of-life electronics are sent to landfills in Canada each year. To address this critical problem, Teck Trail Operations - in consultation with the BC Ministry of Environment - developed an electronics recycling process, which meets all of the provincial government’s environmental performance requirements. By recycling end-of-life electronics, Teck produces metals that don’t have to be mined.

Tour: The Waneta Dam, Teck Trail Operations, Trail, BC
Date: Thursday, 17 November 2011
Time: 4:30P PM – 6:30 PM
Together with the generous support of Teck Trail Operations, the West Kootenay Branch of APEGBC is delighted to offer a tour of The Waneta Dam power generation facility.
About the Waneta Dam
Teck owns 2/3rd of the Waneta hydroelectric dam, which is located on the Pend d’Oreille River. The remaining 1/3rd interest is owned by BC Hydro. Power from the dam is vital to Teck’s huge metal and fertilizer production complex of Trail Operations, where a large part of the output is based on electrolytic processes. Through Teck-owned transmission
lines, the Waneta dam is linked to Trail Operations, the provincial power grid, and the United States power grid.
Dam structure
Construction completed in 1954,
Concrete, Height: 64 m, Length: 290 m
Rated capacity
Total: 490,000 kW (Basic: 375,000 kW + 4 Upgrades: 115,000 kW)
Generation
Total: 2,750,000,000 kW.h (Basic: 2,480,000,000 kW.h + 4 Upgrades: 270,000,000 kW.h)
Usage
Trail Operations: 1,800,000,000 kW.h/annum average
BC Hydro: 950,000,000 kW.h/annum average
Fun fact
The Waneta generators produce enough power to light a 100-watt bulb continuously in more than 3,000,000 homes, or replace 1,500,000 barrels of crude oil per year, or supply a city of 250,000 with power.
Safety
The tour is limited to individuals 18 years of age, or older. Attendees must provide their own safety-toed boots and work clothes (long pants and long sleeves) and must wear safety glasses and hard hats (a limited supply of glasses and hats will be available prior to the tour, but please bring your own, if possible). We will arrange the High-Viz Vests.
Cost
There is no charge for this event, but prior registration is mandatory. As space is limited to only 12 people, registrations will be accepted in the order received by email.
If you would like more details please contact myself, Waseem Saeed at saeedmw@yahoo.com.
We look forward to seeing you there.

Nelson Brewing Company Tour
The West Kootenay Branch of APEGBC is pleased to organize a brewery tour on Saturday, September 25 starting at 2:30 pm. The tour group will be limited to the first 15 registrants (members plus guests) due to the small size of the brewery. If interested, then please register by sending an email to Norman Deverney at deverney.engineering@shawcable.com. Please note that registrations will be confirmed on the basis of the order in which the emails are received.
The tour will take about 1 hour.
The Nelson Brewing Company (NBC) is a craft brewery located in Nelson, British Columbia, the cultural and recreational heart of the West Kootenay region.
Since its inception in 1991, the Nelson Brewing Company has been dedicated to producing all natural, traditional, full-flavoured ales. In 2006, NBC decided to let the brewery evolve to an even more natural state, and by October of that year the NBC were granted Certified Organic status. The tour will be hosted by Brewmaster Mike Kelly. So, you can be rest assured that you will hear about the brewing process from the best.
Some sampling might occur, including NBC's latest creation, the Harvest Moon Organic Hemp Ale. A clean, crisp Kolsch style ale cold conditioned on Kootenay time and brewed with the finest organic malt, hops, fresh Nelson water and yeast with a twist of B.C. culture.
After the tour, take some time to enjoy shopping on the famous Baker Street, and try one of Nelson's many fine restaurants.
