OUR INFRASTRUCTURE: AGING PAST THE GOLDEN YEARS

Bridges are the lifeline of our communities. Mr. Henley and Mr. Cook will discuss the aging bridge infrastructure in the region and provide some insights to maximize value of our existing bridges.
10:45 –11:30: ALIGNING LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT WITH PROVINCIAL OBJECTIVES
Glen Brown – Ministry of Community & Rural Development
Mr. Brown will provide an overview of the state of infrastructure in local communities and an outlook into the future Provincial funding programs. Mr. Brown will also present a framework for municipalities to keep asset renewal in the forefront of financial planning.

The panel discussion is presented by MMCD and CEBC. Topics include:
- Quality-Based selection of services (professionals, contractors, equipments and supplies)
- Realistic budgeting for projects
Panelists include a representative from Canadian Council of Independent Laboratory, Glenn Martin (CEBC) and John Boyle, P.Eng. (Dayton & Knight)

11:30 -12:00 Vancouver Landfill – Current Projects -
Lynn Belanger – Manager of Landfill & Transfer Operations will discuss some of the ongoing projects underway at the Landfill prior to the tour.
12:00 – 1:00 Lunch – members will travel to the Landfill prior to 1:00pm
1:00 – 1:30 Automated Collection Vehicles Display -
City of Vancouver will have one of their automated vehicles on hand. We are trying to arrange other models to be available as well.
1:30 – 3:00 Tour of Vancouver Landfill and Maxim Power -
Tour will visit landfill site and neighbouring greenhouses where landfill gas is converted to electricity by BC Hydro and used to fire boilers to heat greenhouses.

MUNICIPAL ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE
Jim Vanderwal is the Program Manager, Climate Change and Air Quality for the Fraser Basin Council.
His will provide a broad overview on how climate change will affect the pattern of extreme weather events
that municipalities can expect to experience.

MOUNTAIN PINE BEETLE EPIDEMIC ABD FLOOD RISK FOR THE FRASER RIVER BASIN
Dr. Alila is an Associate Professor in the Department of Forest Resources Management. He has been
extensively involved in the investigation of the effects of mountain pine beetle deforestation on watersheds in BC.

What is MED?
The MED is a long standing division of APEGBC which was originally formed in 1943. It is a public service oriented organization of Professional Engineers that promotes and encourages leadership in the delivery of municipal engineering services.
What does MED do?
The MED provides a valuable forum for professional public sector engineers to meet, exchange ideas, debate issues, and to be a catalyst (impetus) for improvement, innovation, sustainability and change in the public sector. Typical programs organized by the MED include:
Technical seminars on municipal engineering and local government issues
Regular newsletters on relevant issues and current events
Development of common standards such as the Master Municipal Construction Documents
The MED allows you to enhance your knowledge, expand your skills, foster networking, and help create a common voice to influence positive change in the public sector.
Who is eligible to join?
Both APEGBC members and non-members who have an interest in the municipal engineering field are welcome to join the MED. However, only APEGBC members may vote or hold executive positions.
Benefits of membership
Members receive discounts on MED sponsored events as well as spring and fall newsletters.
How to join:
Annual membership costs $26.75 (including taxes) and shall be paid to the Municipal Engineers Division c/o APEGBC.
