1) Who can participate in the mentoring program?
The mentoring program is open to EITs, GITs and Applicants. Mentors hold either P.Eng. or P.Geo. status.
2) Is a mentor the same as a supervisor?
Mentors and supervisors have different roles. A supervisor directly supervises the work of the member in training. A mentor provides overall career advice and assists with issues that may arise during the professional experience phase. A mentor does not provide direct supervision to the member in training. The mentor and supervisor should work collaboratively to assist the member in training to achieve professional status.
3) Does the supervisor need to be involved in the mentoring relationship?
While it is optimal that the supervisor and mentor work collaboratively to meet the needs of the mentee, the involvement of the supervisor in the mentoring relationship is not required.
4) What happens after I send in my application form to the Mentoring Program?
The APEGBC contact person will present your application form to the Mentoring Committee. One of the Committee members will then take on your file and look at the database of mentors/mentees to see if there is a suitable match. If a match is not found in the existing database, the Committee member will search for other potential matches.
5) How long does it take to be paired with a mentor/mentee?
It can sometimes take several months before a suitable match is made. The Committee is a small volunteer-driven one with a small database of mentors to choose from. Often, the Committee members must extend their search outside of the database and sometimes, the Committee member must make several calls before an appropriate match is made.
6) How do you match mentors with mentees?
A match is based mainly on the industry, expertise and geographic location of the mentor and mentee.
7) Am I obligated to accept a match?
No. It is important that you feel comfortable with the person you are matched with, so please feel free to let the Mentoring Committee know of your concerns, and they will look for another match for you.
8) What happens during a mentor-mentee meeting?
Mentors and mentees meet in person or talk on the phone. The following documents may be of assistance to you: Mentor/Mentee Sample Meeting Agenda and Minutes, 4-Year Plan, Sample 4-Year Plan, Mentee's 4-Year Plan.
9) Are CPD credits granted for involvement in the Mentoring Program?
Yes. Please keep track of the time spent during the mentoring meetings. As well, you will receive CPD credits for participating in the annual Mentoring Program event.
10) How often do the mentor and menteemeet?
For maximum benefit, it is encourage that the mentor and mentee talk on a monthly basis.
