Principles of Alarm Management for Complex Systems Seminar. A wide spectrum of industries depends on alarm management systems to notify operators of abnormal conditions and help them decide on an appropriate response to avoid or minimize harmful consequences. Alarm management systems are integral part of risk management in products and systems ranging from standalone medical devices to mass transit systems to large industrial plants with control rooms manned 24/7 by operators. This seminar will provide participants with an introduction to the principles of alarm management and strategies for evaluating, monitoring and improving an alarm management system. Key concepts of EEMUA 191 and other authoritative sources of guidance for alarm management will be presented. A variety of accidents linked to problems in the management of alarms will be used to illustrate some of these key concepts.

Seminar Objectives

- gain an understanding of the purpose and role of an alarm management system
- become familiar with typical elements of an alarm management system
- learn key design principles of an alarm management system
- understand the relationship between alarm management and risk management
- become familiar with common deficiencies and other problems of alarm management systems
- learn some strategies for evaluating, monitoring and improving an alarm management system

Prerequisites

General familiarity with risk management concepts as well as familiarity with at least one instance of an alarm management system.
