This seminar is tailored towards attendees who wish to have a better understanding of hydrogeological and groundwater management concepts. Through this practical and informative seminar, the attendees will learn about:
  1. Groundwater in BC, groundwater system concepts, aquifer basic physical properties, aquifer parameters, and fundamental laws and principles governing groundwater flow.
  2. Groundwater governance in BC: groundwater provisions in the Water Sustainability Act and related regulation (overview), and related guideline documents (overview).
  3. Groundwater exploration and supply development: from well drilling to successfully placing a water supply well online (well construction, design considerations, in situ hydrogeological assessments, well testing requirements, role of the hydrogeologist, and project management).
  4. Aspects and importance of sustainable groundwater management: groundwater monitoring, and wellhead and aquifer protection.
  5. Aspects and importance of a well maintenance program: well performance monitoring, and well preventive maintenance and rehabilitation.

Unique Features of the Course

The course includes case studies, some hands-on exercises, and ample time for discussions and questions. Furthermore, a Groundwater Model will be on display (a tank in which water is being circulated by a pump, and dye is injected to visualize how groundwater flows through different types of aquifer formations, interaction/connectivity between surface water and groundwater, and groundwater contamination principles). Course participants are encouraged to use and experiment with the Groundwater Model during the seminar.

Target Audience

Engineering, geological, and environmental professionals (APEGBC members/non-member) interested in learning about hydrogeology and groundwater management. The course is valuable for professionals who work with hydrogeologists in a team environment and/or are involved in groundwater-based water systems or construction projects above (vulnerable) aquifers. The course is not intended for hydrogeologists.

Seminar Duration and Requirements

The seminar is designed for one day. Seminar participants are encouraged to bring a notebook and/or tablet (for internet access) and a calculator.

Speaker

Dr. Ineke Kalwij, P.Eng., is a hydrogeologist with 20 years of experience in the field of surface water and groundwater through consulting, research (academia), and applied research (scientific research organization). Ineke has a PhD in groundwater engineering (groundwater system optimization), and she received formal training in Project Management at the University of British Columbia. Ineke is the owner of Kalwij Water Dynamics Inc. (KWD), a private consulting company which specializes in hydrogeology, groundwater engineering, water management, and project management.
