Intrinsically safe circuits must have three major components: the field (intrinsically safe) device; the energy limiting device (also referred to as the barrier); and the field wiring. The Intrinsically Safe Instrumentation Essentials seminar will present material on all three of these components. After attending this seminar, the engineering professional will be able to tune the implementation of electronic circuits and systems that need to operate in hazardous environments.

Seminar Description

How to design Intrinsically Safe Instrumentation is the topic of the third seminar of the 'Robust Electronics Essentials' series. Electrical circuits in many industrial environments must operate in the presence of volatile gases. In these environments, intrinsically safe instrumentation design principles are employed to prevent the electronic circuits from releasing sufficient energy to ignite any gases which may be present. Intrinsically safe circuits must have three major components: the field (intrinsically safe) device, the energy limiting device (also referred to as the barrier), and the field wiring. The Intrinsically Safe Instrumentation Essentials seminar will present material on all three of these components. The engineering professional will understand the problems associated with intrinsically safe instrumentation after attending this seminar, and be able to generate appropriate instrumentation implementations. It is assumed that the attendee has basic engineering knowledge but is not necessarily an expert in instrumentation systems.

Learning Objectives

The seminar focuses on intrinsically safe instrumentation techniques that guarantee upper limits for energy release in hazardous environments. An electronic presentation will be provided with a hard copy of all slides and additional notes being supplied to attendees. 


The following topics are addressed:

  • Hazardous area sensing.
  • Principle of intrinsic safety.
  • Intrinsic safety barriers.
  • The 80/20 design rule.
  • Intrinsically safe analog and digital inputs and outputs.
  • Standards and certification.
  • Design examples and testing.

Target Audience

The intended audience is electrical and computer engineers working with electronics, embedded systems, computer and instrumentation systems and measurement systems. Guidance is provided to the engineering professional who needs to solve intrinsically safe instrumentation problems. It is assumed that the attendee has basic engineering knowledge but no previous instrumentation knowledge is required.

Presenters

Dr. Michael L. McGuire, P.Eng.
Penciltronics, Inc.

Michael McGuire has more than 20 years of engineering experience in various academic and commercial organizations as a software developer, testing engineer, and researcher. He worked in Wireless Communications, Optical Communications, and Radiolocation. He had been with Lucent Technologies in New Jersey, USA, for two years researching high-end radio handsets and Embedded Systems. He has performed research for Bell Canada, and is currently a consultant for Wifarer Canada. He is also an Associate Professor at the University of Victoria, British Columbia and holds a PhD in electrical engineering. Dr. McGuire is registered as a Professional Engineer in the Province of British Columbia.

Dr. Mihai Sima, P.Eng.
Penciltronics, Inc.

Mihai Sima has more than 25 years of engineering experience in various academic and commercial organizations as a research and design engineer on various hi-tech projects. He currently works in Integrated Circuits Design and Testing, Embedded Systems, and Instrumentation Electronics. He had been with Philips Research Labs in the Netherlands for four years researching media processors augmented with Field-Programmable Gate Arrays. He was a consultant for Sandbridge Technologies, New York, in the fields of Software-Defined Radios and Digital Signal Processing. He is also an Associate Professor at the University of Victoria, British Columbia and holds a PhD in computer engineering. Dr. Sima is registered as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia, Ontario, and the European Union.
