Seminar Description

Knowing how to design printed circuit boards for custom electronics is a valuable skill for an engineering professional. This is the first seminar of the 'Robust Electronics Essentials' series. ‘Printed Circuit Board Essentials’ is intended to provide engineers the essentials of Printed-Circuit Board (PCB) design. Attendees will know how to design, specify, and order prototype PCBs at the conclusion of this seminar. The various stages of the design of a basic linear power supply will be used to demonstrate PCB design. The attendees are assumed to have basic electronics knowledge but no PCB design knowledge is required. The course material will be presented using the KiCAD free software for PCB design. This software is distributed under the GNU Public License Version 3, so no licensing agreements are required to use the software. Each attendee will be required to install KiCAD on their laptop. The skills learned will also be applicable to other PCB design software packages.

PCB design is a specialized skill. PCB layout engineers are responsible for designing boards which provide high performance but are also inexpensive and/or easy to manufacture. Computer Aided Design software has made PCB layout easier but balancing all of the priorities of component and conductor-trace layout is still challenging. This course will instruct attendees on the design process and how to balance the multiple priorities of PCB design. This session is geared towards professionals with a strong interest in the implementation of electronic systems. Group design exercises will be included.

Learning Objectives

Hands-on experience in PCB design will be provided. The KiCAD layout software and standard technology examples will be provided. An electronic presentation will be provided along with hard copies of all the slides and additional notes. A linear power supply’s design with accompanying calculations will be provided.

The following topics are addressed:

  • KiCAD: Computer-Aided Design software for PCB design.
  • PCB materials and manufacturing technologies.
  • Project definition and organization.
  • Electronic schematic symbols.
  • Review of electronic schematic drawing standards.
  • Selecting component footprints.
  • Basic PCB layout generation.
  • Finalizing PCB design and ordering for manufacturing.

Target Audience

The intended audience is electrical and computer engineers working with electronics, embedded systems, computers, and instrumentation systems, and measurement systems. This seminar provides guidance to engineering professionals who wish to perform general PCB design. It is assumed that the attendee has basic electronics knowledge. No previous PCB design knowledge is required.
