The objective of this two-day course is to provide an overview of the electric power system, associated sub-systems, and industry practices. A balance will be maintained between the fundamentals and the state of the art. Attendees will have sufficient depth and breadth on various topics on electrical power engineering that will allow them to communicate in technical terms and achieve higher success in their respective fields of practice.

Seminar Description

The electric power industry is increasingly becoming multi-disciplinary—seeking involvement from a wide variety of industry practitioners. Conventional large-generation based bulk electric systems are being incrementally revolutionized by the addition of variable renewables, storage technologies, electric vehicles, advanced communication and control, as well as development and implementation of many new smart-grid technologies. Consequently, the landscape is also changing where broad-based issues on environment, regulation, finance, entrepreneurship, and engineering (including civil and mechanical) need frequent dialogue.

The following major topics will be covered in this course:

  1. Electric Power System Fundamentals.
  2. Electric Equipment.
  3. Generation.
  4. Transmission (ac/dc).
  5. Distribution.
  6. Power Substation.
  7. System Protection and Operation.
  8. System Stability and Power Quality.
  9. Renewable Power and Storage.
  10. Power Electronics.

Learning Objectives

The attendees will be exposed to the following broad areas of electric power systems: 

  • Fundamentals of electrical power systems, history, de-regulation.
  • Bulk electric systems—generation, transmission, distribution.
  • Power system planning, operation, stability, and power quality.
  • Advances in power system, dc transmission, power electronics, renewable energy, and storage.

Dr. Jahangir Khan, P.Eng.
Senior Engineer, BC Hydro

Jahangir Khan is a Senior Engineer at BC Hydro. His professional career started at Powertech Labs in 2007. Since 2014 he has been working at BC Hydro’s Station Planning Group - under Asset Investment Management (AIM T&D).
 
Jahangir received his Doctoral and Master’s degrees from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, in 2001.
 
Jahangir is the Co-Chair of the IEC PT 62600-30 and Region Representative for the IEEE PES Western-Canada. He held various positions for IEEE Vancouver’s IAS/IES joint chapter, and was the Vice-Chair of IEEE PES GM 2013 Organizing Committee. Jahangir has made important technical contributions in the fields of ocean energy and renewable technologies including wind, solar, wave, tidal, hydrokinetic, and energy storage systems. Jahangir has co-authored more than 15 peer-reviewed journal articles, 20 conference papers, 10 reports and other informal communique.
 
Jahangir received distinction for his Doctoral work, and was two-time Fellow of the School of Graduate Studies at Memorial University. His paper received best paper award in NECEC 2007 conference. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Ocean Technologies. Jahangir is a registered professional engineer in BC and a senior member of IEEE.
 

Dr. Martin Ordonez, P.Eng.
Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair, University of British Columbia

Dr. Martin Ordonez is the Canada Research Chair in Power Converters for Renewable Energy Systems and Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada. He is also the holder of the Fred Kaiser Professorship on Power Conversion and Sustainability at UBC. He was an adjunct Professor with Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC, Canada, and MUN. His industrial experience in power conversion includes research and development at Xantrex Technology Inc./Elgar Electronics Corp. (now AMETEK Programmable Power in San Diego, California), Deep-Ing Electronica de Potencia (Rosario, Argentina), and TRV Dispositivos (Cordoba, Argentina). With the support of industrial funds and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, he has contributed to more than 100 publications and R&D reports.
 
Dr. Ordonez is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, a Guest Editor for IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics, serves on several IEEE committees, and reviews widely for IEEE/IET journals and international conferences. He was awarded the David Dunsiger Award for Excellence in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (2009) and the Chancellors Graduate Award/Birks Graduate Medal (2006), and became a Fellow of the School of Graduate Studies, MUN.
 
Martin was born in Neuquen, Argentina. He received the Ing. degree in electronics engineering from the National Technological University, Cordoba, Argentina, in 2003, and the M.Eng. and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from the Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), St. John’s, NL, Canada, in 2006 and 2009, respectively.
