This is the second part of the course module designed to explain the lateral loads on buildings. It is expected that the attendees have the knowledge to calculate the lateral loads based on the NBCC. The course will deal with the design of steel bracing and solid concrete shear wall (without opening or coupling beam). Different types of Diaphragm will be shown and by the use of different examples their effect on the loads will be explained. The loads from the soil on the building will be calculated and design of a retaining walls will be illustrated. The effect of the lateral loads on the foundation and the effect of the soil type in conjunction with code requirements will be discussed.

After Attending The Course You Will:

  • Have a good understanding of the types of distribution of the lateral loads within the building.
  • Capable of designing different steel bracing types.
  • Understand the design of a solid shear wall.
  • Design foundation to support the lateral loads.
  • Check the stability of the buildings.
  • Follow the NBCC requirements in the design.

Prerequisites:

It is recommended that attendees have taken Part 1 of this course module.

Course Outline:

  • Different types of bracing system.
  • Design requirement of structural steel members under tension.
  • Special effect on the design of steel structures.
  • Design of a solid shear wall.
  • Special requirements on the concrete walls.
  • Diaphragm design.
  • Effect of the lateral loads on the foundations.
  • Stability of the building and foundation.
  • Soil pressure and retaining walls.
  • Code requirements.

Target Audience:

  • Civil Engineers.
  • Structural Engineers.
  • Designers.
  • Consulting Architects and Engineers.
  • Construction Engineers.
  • Fabricators and Manufacturers of Structural Systems.
  • Municipal Building Officials.
  • Field Inspector.
