Affective computing is the development of systems and devices that can recognize, interpret, and process human affect. Advances in physiological sensor technology and machine learning techniques have lead to the advent of affordable applications of affective computing in the wearable and digital health industries.

Awake Labs will discuss the benefits of affective computing for autistic individuals, the advantages and disadvantages of specific machine learning algorithms, and the challenges of navigating a disruptive, innovative space with little history of regulatory practices.

7:00 AM: Breakfast Served (buffet format)
7:30 AM – 8:45AM: Featured Presentation by Awake Labs Inc.

Speaker Profile

Awake Labs is committed to improving the lives of individuals with mental health disorders. Their first product is Reveal, a wearable device to measure anxiety for the 1-in-68 individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, to empower families giving better insights into care, understand complex behaviours, and promote long term independence through self-regulation. Reveal measures physiological indicators of anxiety in real-time to provide caregivers with quantified data that will better inform their care and maximize their child’s potential. Awake Labs incorporated in September 2015, and has been developing Reveal through a UBC CREB-approved study.

The team has secured partnerships with local and international autism support providers, and participated in reputable business programs like the Next36 and the Coast Capital Savings Innovation Hub.

Awake Labs is managed by Andrea Palmer, CEO, and Paul Fijal, Head of Product Development. Andrea studied Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Mechatronics at UBC and is a Singularity University graduate. Paul studied Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Biomedical, and is a TEDx speaker.
